Qatar’s Sports Achievements

AFC Asian Cup 2019

Qatar accomplished key sporting achievements that can’t be overlooked, since it marked itself in the history record for the first time, after its football team won AFC Asian Cup 2019, which was hosted by UAE, registering a resounding 3-1 win over Japan in the final match.

Qatar football team took the lead in the first round in the Asian Cup, scoring 2-0 win over Lebanon, 6-0 over North Korea, 2-0 over KSA, and 1-0 over Iraq in the 16th round. In addition, the team registered 1-0 win over South Korea in the quarter-final, and 4-0 over UAE in the semi-final.

Al Moez Ali won the title of the Best Player and Scorer, as well as a USD $30,000 prize, after scoring nine (9) goals in AFC Asian Cup 2019 championship.

Nasser Saleh Al Attiyah, Middle East Rally Champion

Record-breaking Nasser Saleh Al Attiyah confirmed a 14th FIA Middle East Rally Championship (MERC) title. In addition, he got the second rank in the international Dakar Rally and Silk Way Rally in 2018.

FINA/HOSA Marathon Swim Series

Doha hosted FINA/HOSA Marathon Swim Series of the Open Water Swimming Championships for the first time, which took place in Doha Corniche on March 2018, with 115 of the world's best swimmers.

This special event enabled a number of Qatari swimmers to participate in many rounds of the tournament and gain experience through interacting with world champions.

Waleed Al Sharshani won the first place in Aquabike World Championship held in Arizona, USA. Moreover, Team Qatar, represented by both Waleed Al Sharshani and Ali Al Naimi, got the third rank in Aquabike World Championship (Thailand King Cup).

Team Qatar got the first rank in the Arab Shooting Championship in its 14th edition in Doha, winning 47 colored medals, including 18 gold, 14 silver, and 15 bronze medals.

Rania’s Gold Medal in Hammer Throw, and Mariam’s Silver Medal in Triple Jump

Rania Rae’d won the gold medal in the Hammer Throw competition, in the West Asia Athletics Championship, which was held in Jordan in 2018.

Moreover, in the same championship, Mariam Farid won the silver medal in the Triple Jump competition.

Barshim’s Gold Medal in the High-Jump

The Qatari champion Mu’taz Barshim succeeded in giving Qatar the first Gold medal in one of the biggest tournaments, after he got the first rank in the high-jump competition, on the last day of the World Athletics Championships in London.

Barshim’s competitors failed to catch up with the 2.35m record broken by the Qatari Falcon, Barshim, who continued his Qatari achievements at the IAAF Diamond League meeting in Birmingham, which was held a few days after the World Cup London, where he maintained his lead.

Qatar athletics’ history witnessed another key achievement when its champion Abdalelah Haroun won the Bronze medal in the same tournament, specifically in the 400m race, recording 44.48 seconds.

Qatar’s name has become unique in the international sports scene, mainly after Neymar deal, which rocked the world when one of best footballers in the world, the Brazilian Neymar de Silva, left FC Barcelona, and went to the French capital Paris, holding the logo of the Paris St Germain (PSG) Club, which is the Club acquired by Qatar. Neymar’s 222 million euro deal was the talk of the international press, after the Qatari management of PSG club succeeded in convincing the Brazilian star to leave FC Barcelona.

Champion Mohammad Abdulwahab claimed the Gold medal of youth at the Arab Table Tennis Cup, after beating Qara Ali Naim of Algeria in the final match at Oman tournament in August 2017.

At the Paralympics..Gold and Silver Medals

Qatar’s Abdulrahman Abdulqader won the Gold medal of Men’s ShotPut (F34) at the Para-Athletics Championships in London, which will continue until July 23, with the participation of more than 1,100 athletes from 95 countries.

Abdulqader won the first place and the Gold medal after scoring 11.38m, which is a new achievement for the Paralympics in Qatar, where he surpassed the Iranian Mohsen Kidi, who won the Silver medal scoring 10.89m, and the Ecuadorian Maurice Valencia who won the Bronze medal for 10.63m.

Qatar’s Sarah Masoud won a Silver medal in the Women’s Shotput F33 event in the same tournament. Sadiq in the Guinness Book of Records Boxer Abdellatif Mohamed Sadiq has been able to break into the Guinness Book of Records after accomplishing 72 push-ups in just one minute in the two-finger push-up exercise, which no other athlete in the world has been able to achieve.

Seven Medals in Asian Athletics

The National Athletics Team completed its participation in the 22nd Asian Athletics Championships, which was hosted at Odisha in India, winning seven medals, including six Silver medals and one Bronze medal, distributed as follows:

Runner Yasser Salem who won two Silver medals for 5000m and 3000m barriers’ race, Jamal Hayran who won the Silver medal for 1500m and 800m , Femi Seun who won the 100m Silver medal and the 200m Bronze medal, and the champion Ahmed Bedeer who won the Silver medal for the javelin competition.

Gold and Bronze Medals in the Arab Athletics Championship

Amjad Al-Saifi, the star of our national athletics team, was crowned with the Gold medal in the hammer-throw competition in the 20th Arab Championship, which was held at Rades Olympic Stadium in Tunisia last July.

This special event witnessed the participation of 400 male and female athletes who represented 17 Arab countries. In the tournament, three colored medals were won; two Gold medals and one Bronze medal. Al-Saifi won the first place, scoring 69,85m. Mohamed Kaida also won a Gold medal in javelin, after succeeding over his Saudi competitors; Ali Abdul Ghany and Abdulla Al Ghamdi. Hamdi Al-Ameen also succeeded in winning the Bronze medal, after he got the third rank in the high-jump competition, recording 2.13m score.
