Media

Over the past fifteen years, media in Qatar has taken great strides towards increased transparency and freedom of information. In 1995, media censorship was abolished and the Ministry of Information was shut down. Independent bodies such as the National Council for Culture, Arts and Heritage and the Qatar General Broadcasting and Television Corporation were established to ensure that Qatari media continue to promote public participation in civil discourse about local and international affairs.

Contemporary media in Qatar advocate national, Gulf, Arabic and Islamic causes. Programming reflects the region’s Arabian and Islamic heritage and morals, and is conscientious about fostering civil society and openness.

Qatar Media Corporation

Established in 2009, Qatar Media Corporation’s responsibilities include managing public radio and television stations, maintaining and enforcing broadcast standards and content guidelines, and developing programming that promotes Qatar’s interests.
